Learning Centers

Preschool children learn through play.  They learn to socialize, problem-solve, and they learn basic skills in reading, math, science, social studies, and art.  In preschool we will have㺭 minutes to an hour during the day for the children to participate in developmentally appropriate learning centers.

Library:
The reading center provides the children with the opportunity to read freely, practice letter recognition, learn concepts of print (left to right tracking), allows them to follow directions, and to learn vocabulary presented in class.

Art Center:
The art center allows children to practice fine motor skills, creative expression, shape recognition, and size relationships.  They explore materials, gain visual perception, and it is used as an assessment tool.

Block Center:
In the block center the children will develop knowledge in special relationships, learn cooperation, balance, cause and effect, shape and size discrimination, and physical coordination.

Dramatic Play:
In dramatic play the children will develop communication skills, learn conflict resolution, vocabulary development, and understand experience through role playing.

Sensory Table:
At the sensory table the children will explore and discover, learn about cause and effect, measurement, problem-solving, and problems of matter.  They will also have lots of fun.

Writing Center:
At the writing center the children will be able to practice their reading and writing skills, and letter recognition through self-directed creations.  The children will be able to use a variety of writing tools, papers, stamps, and stickers to write books, letters, stories, or gifts for their families.  The writing center is one of the BIGGEST hits with small children.

Discovery Center:
At the science center the children will be able to discover, experiment, explore, and make predictions and conclusions based on their observations and findings.  Children are very observant people and at the science center they will feel successful and proud of the conclusions they come to in the scientific world.

Music Center:
At the music center the children will be able to experiment with sounds, rhythm, language, and movement.  They will have an opportunity to create music, study music, and most importantly, make music.  The children will be able to use instruments and even make their own instruments.

Cooking Center:
The children are responsible for making their own snack each day.  This center allows the children to be creative with their food, read recipes, and feel a sense of accomplishment as they bite into that finished masterpiece.  Cooking involves so many spectrums of learning, from math to literacy.  The children love it!

Peaceful Place:
The Peaceful Place is an area in the room that is somewhat secluded from the hustle and bustle.  A child can go to the peaceful place on his/her own or with one other friend.  The Peaceful Place is where children can calm down when upset, take a moment by themselves, or think about what to do next.
